About The Device Layer
An essay-led publication about where technical security meets human judgment.
The Device Layer is a weekly, long-form publication about trust at the boundary between people and interfaces, software and physical devices, self-custody and institutions, human intent and cryptographic authorization, and autonomous agents and human authority. It reads closer to a research journal with personality than a crypto-news site — fewer features, stronger evidence, exceptionally good reading.
The recurring thesis across the editions is that trust cannot be removed from these systems — only made auditable. The site tries to be an example of that culture: every substantive essay carries a Trust Ledger listing claims checked, primary sources, commercial interests, what is confirmed, and what remains uncertain.
The author
The Device Layer is written by illithics (@illithicKeepKey) — COO of KeepKey and a data analyst who studies crypto security, self-custody, and digital ownership from the perspective of an open-source hardware wallet company.
Affiliations & conflicts of interest
Stated plainly: the author is the COO of KeepKey, a company that sells open-source hardware wallets. This publication regularly discusses the wallet market, including KeepKey's direct competitors (Ledger, Trezor, Tangem, Coinkite) and adjacent platforms (Coinbase, MetaMask).
The publication handles that conflict three ways:
- The Device Layer is a personal side project. It is not reviewed, sponsored, approved, or directed by KeepKey, and it carries no advertising from anyone.
- Every essay that touches the wallet market carries an inline disclosure note naming the relationship relevant to that essay.
- Each essay's Trust Ledger lists which cited sources have commercial interests — including the author's.
Transparency is meant to strengthen the writing, not excuse it. If you believe an essay fails that standard, say so — corrections are logged publicly.
Why "the device layer"?
Every digital decision bottoms out somewhere physical: a chip that holds a key, a screen that shows what you're approving, a button under your thumb. The device layer is that bottom — the boundary where human intent becomes cryptographic authorization, and where software's promises finally have to be kept by hardware.
